Diverse Abilities Plus

Diverse Abilities Plus is Dorset charity founded over 50 years ago by a local family whose child was born with cerebral palsy.  The charity has steadily grown to support people living with physical and learning disabilities in our local community through a range of invaluable projects and services.

The charity provides a lifetime of care and support for hundreds of children, young people and adults with physical and learning disabilities in Wimborne and the surrounding areas.  The charity runs a specialist school for children with profound disabilities and complex needs, which provides nursing and therapy as well as specialist teaching to help children become as communicative and independent as possible.  To help families the charity also runs a short break respite home, domiciliary care to help families in their own homes, school holiday activities and after school clubs, plus a parents’ support group.

This support continues into adulthood as the charity provides supported living in specially adapted bungalows with 24hr care from a dedicated team plus a day opportunities centre for adults.  In addition to this the charity also offers an advice service and advocacy service to help people access benefits or create lasting powers of attorney.

Together these provide close to a quarter a million hours of support every single year. Funds raised at the Wimborne Food festival will enable this vital support to continue and to grow to support more local families.

Waitrose   Waitrose Branch Manager, Ian Burdekin, comments

"The Wimborne Food Festival is an extremely important event in the town's calendar, and one that we are especially delighted to be able to sponsor. We are passionate about supporting local producers, and with over 2,500 local and regional products sold throughout our stores, we feel that our funding of the festival further builds on this commitment.

This year we'll hopefully be able to encourage even more people to come and visit the festival and find out about the delicious food and drink that Wimborne, and it's talented producers, have to offer. I'm especially looking forward to talking to local producers and tasting any new and unusual products that we may be able to stock in the future.

Throughout the weekend we will be sampling the Waitrose products as well as demonstrating some of our delicious recipes, all of which can be found on our website.

We even have a jazz band coming to the show in order to get people in the mood for trying and buying local produce."
